In this day and age of watching what we put into our bodies, we stay focused mainly on carbs, fat, calories, artificial ingredients, etc. Sodium is not always the first thing on the label we see. But if you do happen to notice just how much salt is in some of the products out there, you;d be taken back. Kraft, in an effort to make the world a healthier place has since decided to reduce the amount in their foods by 10%.
While Irish fare isn't looked to as the "healthiest" of cuisine, that doesn't mean it can't be augmented to be just that. Most of us are at least somewhat conscious of our health, unless you're Donna Simpson (look it up), but that doesn't mean you have to skirt the traditional dishes of St. Paddy's altogether. A simple tweak to Corned Beef and Cabbage can make the dish healthy without sacrificing tradition or taste.
There are bound to be a number of St. Patrick's Day festivities going on around you this evening. Thinking more about partaking in a green brew or two, your mind is most likely not thinking about the morning after and the dreaded hangover. While we all swear by certain "cures," there really isn't a set-in-stone remedy. Don't let that stop you from trying, though. It is sometimes all just mental.
Is anyone planning on playing a little hooky from work tomorrow and partake in the all-day festivities of St. Patrick's Day? We know of some Irish pubs opening their doors as early as 8AM. That's dedication. While we'll definitely be in the office (someone has to take care of these staffing needs, afterall), if you plan on making tomorrow a marathon of green beverages, kick it all off with a traditional Irish dinner tonight.
Penrose-St. Francis Health Services was named one of the 50 top hospitals by HealthGrades, a Boulder-based independent health care ratings organization. HealthGrades analyzes patient outcomes at all 5,000 of the nation’s nonfederal hospitals, using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Sometimes, nothing beats the taste of good, hearty homemade sandwich for lunch. And, especially in this economy, saving a few bucks where ever you can, is ideal. However, after awhile, that sandwich can become a bit mundane. If you feel like adding a little variety to life, turn that everyday hoagie into a delicious and portable taco bar.
Scene: You're at the movies with friends, family, or, perhaps, a date. Before finding the theater and settling into your seats, you hit the snack bar. Faced with the normal treats, popcorn, nachos, pretzels, candy, you also notice a "lighter" menu with healthier foods. "What is that?" You think to yourself. You continue, "Maybe opting for something a bit better for me won't leave me feeling like I have to slide out of my seat at the end of the film." The heads at Sony are hoping this is exactly what people will think as they urge theater owners to offer better snacks.
There's a hot dog stand across town that promises to stay true to the Chicago way of the dog. This means, they serve up frankfurters with no utensils, and if you ask for ketchup, you may be asked to leave. According to Chicago hot dog tradition, the red stuff ruins the pureness that is encased meat. We wonder if that means asking for Mango Chutney is out, too. Only one way to find out. Road trip anyone?
Doctors are set to unveil the world's first sticking plaster that can cure cancer.
We haven't delved too deep into the world of the Greek foods here at WSi. For whatever reason, the delicacies haven't come up as often as, say, Thai food, Mexican dishes, and American classics. To remedy this, try a chicken gyro tonight. If you're scared to try something new, just think of it as a rolled sandwich with a light ranch sauce made from cucumber. Easy as that...
Regardless of your thoughts, the widely publicized Health Care Reform has hit more than a few snags on its long and winding journey. Fierce opposition, questionable new practices, and a great number not understanding exactly what the reform entails have held it up quite a bit. Is the addition of the Student Loan Reform to the bill the tipping point or a last ditch effort?
Sometimes there needs to be no rhyme or reason behind what to have for dinner. Sitting at the desk today, something about tostadas just seemed to hit us just right. A simple search of one of our favorite foodie sites yielded one heck of a recipe. It's like they read our minds. Creepy.
Aside from the beautiful scenery, open spaces, and accessibility to the Rocky Mountains, there seems to be a new reason Colorado Springs is a place to call home. The state health care professional loan repayment program is now saying that if a professional is employed in an outpatient practice with a staffing shortage for 'X' amount of time, student loan repayment may be in order.
A few nights back, we went out for pizza. However, by the time the actual pie came, we had filled up on the appetizer: a heaping antipasto plate. Regardless of how amazing the leftover slices were the next day, wouldn't combining the two dishes be the ideal remedy for this problem? Definitely.
As we are still reeling from the recession and holding tight to every red cent in our pockets, small signs are coming here and there that there just might be an end in sight. As people gain more faith in the economy and as employers begin to hire more, spirits are lifting as we hope to see that light at the end of the tunnel.
We'll admit that at first, the name of this recipe was a complete turn off. Scrambled egg pasta? Really? Yikes. But after analyzing the ingredients and seeing bacon on the list, our minds quickly changed. If you're feeling up to trying something new and with a taste that has the potential to be out of this world, try this one. Now, is ketchup or marinara sauce the dip of choice?
Healthcare continued its trend towards growth in employment by adding 12,000 jobs in February, according to a release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
It's Friday, and that means another work week has come to an end. Already, 2010 is flying by at the same speed as 2009. Time to start laying out the Halloween costume if it keeps up at this rate. But if everything seems rushed and like life's going by too fast, take a breath this weekend, spend some quality time with loved ones, and treat them to an outstanding breakfast akin to this frittata.
It has nothing to do with Michael J. Fox's superb performance in the 1991 blockbuster, Doc Hollywood, but it seems he has another chance to play doctor. Sweden's Karolinska institute has given the critically acclaimed actor and Parkinson's disease awareness raiser the title of honorary doctor. Perhaps this will inspire a sequel. If not, it's still quite an honor.
With Saint Patrick's day right around the corner (March 17), we thought it best to brush up on your Irish cooking skills. While Corned Beef and Cabbage are traditional fare, the pizza twist makes it look all the more appetizing. We're all a little Irish come the 17th, right? Might as well partake in the festivities.
