For many professionals, their job is just a job. A way to earn a living. A way to take care of their families. Nurses have a different approach; their daily work is gratifying. A nurse has the opportunity to save lives, help patients feel better, and provide quality care to other humans. While it may seem that some days are tedious and focused all on patients, here are some reasons why nursing is a rewarding career for the nurse as well:

  • Work-life balance. For the most part, a nurse can have input on their schedules. Nursing offers flexibility that allows you to balance your family life and work. It is possible for registered nurses to have flexible hours, where they can work part-time, full time, days, evenings, or late shifts. You can have a routine where you work a short day or stay on for long shifts with four days a week off.

  • Job security. You can find a nursing job just about anywhere in the country. You don't have to worry so much about unexpected or sudden changes in your life. As a nursing professional, you can find work in urban areas, small cities, suburban communities, rural areas, resort towns, and even overseas.

  • A comfortable lifestyle. Nursing provides competitive salaries and benefits. You often make enough money to support a single-parent household or have extra income for two working spouses. The majority of nursing jobs offer health insurance, vacation time, retirement, and pension plans. As you advance in the field, you can expect to earn more.

  • Opportunities. You can pretty much always find new opportunities in the nursing field.  You can work directly with patients in a healthcare facility, handle trauma care, serve as a legal nurse consultant in the court system, use your nursing skills to teach and write or interact with children and the elderly. Travel nurses are in high demand over the holidays and throughout the year when new facilities open or there is an increased need for nursing staff.

Your job as a nurse can be financially rewarding, but it can always be a rewarding career. After the work and time you’ve put in to become the best possible nurse, you want to know your effort will pay off. In nursing, it will. The more experience and education you have, the better your career choices can be.
