You’ve hired great employees. You’ve tried to cultivate a team that produces results. You’ve worked hard to make sure they feel appreciated.

How do you keep the momentum going? How do you allow each team member to shine while still being part of the strong team?

As a leader, knowing your people is a critical part of your role. You should know their strengths and weaknesses, their likes and dislikes, and even how to help them improve in their professional goals. When you can bring out their strengths, your team will see a lot of growth. Each person brings something unique to your team and knowing how and when to let them shine is something you should strive for as their leader.

Here are some things you can incorporate into the workday to help your team excel:

-Ask them! Some people may not be aware of their strengths. If they don’t know, you can try team training that helps to identify strengths with tests, surveys, scenarios, and other methods that will help to identify these traits.

-Delegate tasks. When an employee is given a new task to complete, they might do very well or it may be a struggle. It is in these times that you’ll be able to help identify their strengths and use a future similar task to help them excel even more. If the task didn’t go so well, you can shift their focus to something else.

-Offer career development. Most of your team will know where they need to focus when it comes to personal improvement. Ask them to do a self-audit and focus on an area where they need to grow. This will provide you with insight as well as help to make your team stronger.

-Provide opportunities to win. No one likes to fail, so why not set up your people for success. While you want your team to improve their weaknesses, sometimes that is all people can think about. Let your team thrive on their strengths, show-off their accomplishments, and encourage each other to improve.

In a world that focuses on weaknesses to sell books, self-help podcasts, and weekend events on self-improvement, it can feel like you should only work on weaknesses. In reality, if you focus on the strengths of a person, their weaknesses will fade into the background. Each person brings something unique and special to the world that only they have, and when you focus on that, you’ll see what incredible things can happen. Rather than being someone who only sees their weaknesses, you can choose to see strengths and put them in situations where they will use that to grow and experience high levels of success.
